My name is Deven Dettloff, and I am the Defensive Line Coach for the football program at the University of Dubuque. I recently graduated, this past May, from Augustana College, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in history. For the duration of my undergraduate studies, I endured many physical and mental changes, as I was trying to balance a four-class schedule, on top of football six out of the seven days of the week, and balance a job for the different bills that I had to cover. There was no time to ensure that I was doing okay mentally. My friends around me, at the time, noticed my struggles and helped me get back to the person I wanted to be. I am very thankful for my friends and family, that I was able to fall back on when things got tough. If it wasn’t for them, there is no telling where I would be today. I have learned to open up and talk with people around me, and that there are things in life that don’t have to be solely on me.
