Hey, it’s DK, Dereck-Earl Saint-Hilaire, and I’m thrilled to share my story with you. I’m a Senior at the University of Dubuque, where I’m proud to be a wide receiver on the football team. I hail from Plantation High School in Broward County, Florida, and I’ve come a long way since arriving in Dubuque. At first, it took some time to adjust to the new environment, as Dubuque was a far cry from home. But I’ve worked hard to create a good mental space for myself, and it’s paid off. I’ve discovered the many joys of being here, including my brothers on the team, friends I’ve made outside of football, and a fantastic support system throughout school. When you first arrive, it may seem overwhelming, but this campus offers numerous outlets to talk to if you need someone to listen. There are various programs to visit if you’re not only mentally drained but also spiritually exhausted. What’s been truly life-changing for me is getting closer to my faith and finding myself through the people God has brought into my life since arriving at the University of Dubuque. It’s amazing how our relationships and experiences can shape us and help us discover our true selves. My faith has been a rock for me, providing comfort, guidance, and strength during challenging times. I’ve learned to lean on my faith when faced with adversity, and it’s helped me grow both as a person and an athlete. My story highlights the importance of community and faith in our lives. By surrounding myself with positive influences and like-minded individuals, I’ve been able to find a sense of belonging and purpose. The University of Dubuque has provided a nurturing environment for me to explore my faith, identity, and passions, and it’s clear that the people I’ve met along the way have had a profound impact on my life Through my experiences, I’ve learned valuable lessons about the importance of mental health, self-care, and seeking help when needed. I’ve also discovered the value of community, faith, and relationships in helping me grow and thrive. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well throughout my life, both on and off the field. My story is a powerful reminder that we’re not alone in our struggles, and that there’s always hope for growth, healing, and self-discovery. By sharing my experiences, I’m inspiring others to prioritize their mental health, seek help when needed, and cultivate meaningful relationships. I’m showing that it’s possible to find strength and comfort in one’s faith, even amid challenges. The University of Dubuque has provided a unique environment that has allowed me to grow not only as a student-athlete but also as a person of faith. The campus’s emphasis on community, support, and spiritual growth has likely played a significant role in my development, and it’s clear that I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to explore my faith and identity. I’ll keep being a beacon of hope and inspiration to my peers. My story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, community, and self-awareness. I’m rooting for myself and my team, both on and off the field!
