My name is Erik Anda, I was born and raised in Andover, Minnesota. I am a sophomore here at the University of Dubuque. I am majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in Psychology to fulfill my dream of being a strength coach. I also play linebacker at UD. Coming to the University of Dubuque was a tough decision, as I would be far away from my family and be in a

new environment by myself. Throughout my life, mental and physical health has always been a big deal for me. From constant anxiety and stress to physical injuries in my sports. My time here in Dubuque has been full of highs and lows. I’ve dealt with many challenges, trying to juggle classes, social life, family, faith, and football. I often felt very overwhelmed and discouraged when it came to school and football. I often would isolate myself from others when my anxiety would start to take over and found myself feeling alone. However, I quickly found support from those on my team and from the people I met here on campus. I found myself leaning on my peers and coaches whenever I was feeling discouraged or down. During my time, I have also found that prioritizin

g my physical health has a direct impact on my mental health. Pushing myself physically and taking care of my body helped boost my morale and helped with my anxiety. Football also plays a huge role in helping with my mental health. Football allows me to escape whatever external conflicts I might be dealing with at the time embracing my brothers and

play a sport I love. Coming to Dubuque has been such a great decision for me and has truly shaped who I am as a person. I’ve made many valuable relationships as well as been taught many life lessons and skills. Most importantly, coming here has taught me to love myself and love those around me.
