My name is Isabella Tierney, and I am a senior on the University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team. Navigating through collegiate athletics is such a blessing and fun opportunity. On the other hand, there is a lot more that goes into being a collegiate athlete that a lot of people do not grasp. It is not only physically demanding, but mentally demanding as well. The hardest part of the game for me always has been the mental side of it. There are a lot of mental battles playing a collegiate sport, but being supported by everyone on campus here makes it an easy battle to fight. My coaches, trainers and teammates are all my family who lift me up more than I could ever ask for. Basketball is so much more than a sport and something that has been such a constant in my life. It has always been something I have had success in and thrived in. Throughout my life I have been through a lot of adversity and have faced brain health struggles. Basketball, despite struggles, is and always has been my safe space. Battling through brain health struggles has never been easy, but this sport and the people involved in it all make it easier. It has gotten me to where I am today and has made me the woman I am today.
