My name’s Dereck-Earl Saint-Hilaire or as you all know me on campus as DK I attended Plantation High School in Broward County, Florida. I’m beginning my junior year at the University of Dubuque where I am a wide receiver on the football team. It took a while to create a good mental space for myself after first arriving in Dubuque as it was nothing like home. I’ve learned to find the many joys of being here in Dubuque such as, my brothers on the team, friends I’ve made outside of football and my great support system throughout school. When you first get here it may be a lot but this campus offers many outlets to speak to if you need an ear. There are many different programs to visit if not only you’re mentally drained but spiritually as well. I feel confident now being away from home and being back with my boys and coaches. I have a really awesome support system that helps me during my darkest times. Your mental health is really important especially as a college student-athlete the stresses of life, sports, and academics can get to all of us. Know that you’re not alone and have a whole campus which you can rely on. God bless.
