I’m a senior at the University of Dubuque, majoring in sports marketing and playing wide receiver for the Spartans football team. I’ve undergone a transformative journey since graduating from Arlington-Lamar High School in 2021. The transition to UD was a significant one as I had never ventured far from my hometown of Arlington, Texas. Initially, I had expected to see playing time as a freshman, but instead, I found myself on the scout team. This unexpected setback, coupled with the distance from my family and familiar surroundings, took a big toll on my physical and mental well-being. My academic performance began to suffer, and I often carried a negative attitude. It wasn’t until I attended a mental health event on campus during mental health week that I began to grasp the significance of prioritizing my mental health, particularly as a student-athlete. Growing up in the south, I was instilled with the values of tough love and emotional stoicism, which I adhered to until my time at UD. My experiences have taught me that it’s essential to acknowledge and address my emotional needs. The support system at UD has been instrumental in helping me recognize the importance of mental health, and I’ve come to appreciate the care and concern shown by the university community. Football has become an outlet for me, allowing me to momentarily set aside my worries and focus on the game. As one of the starting receivers for the Spartans, I’ve learned that my attitude plays a crucial role in determining my success. The phrase “your attitude determines your altitude” has become a personal mantra, guiding me to approach each day with a positive mindset. Mental health is a pressing issue that often goes unaddressed in the US, especially with men. Through my experiences, I’ve come to realize the significance of prioritizing mental well-being, and I’m committed to raising awareness about its importance for everyone.
