My name is Felicity Figlinski. I attended Appleton West high school in Appleton, Wisconsin and am a sophomore at the University of Dubuque. I am currently on the women’s basketball team and plan on majoring in Sports Marketing/Management with a minor in Business. Physical and mental health are important to me because basketball has brought me amazing friendships, positive opportunities, a sense of community, and a healthy and active lifestyle. Being a team captain has helped me become a better leader by teaching me responsibility, time management, and speaking up for myself. Recently, I tore my ACL. It is mentally and physically challenging, because once you’re unable to play the sport you love, it is tough to watch and not play alongside your teammates. It is also a long recovery, so having patience can help you work through the mental and physical challenges that lie ahead. Although there is a long recovery period in front of me, I am very grateful for all my relationships here at Dubuque and for all the support from my friends and family. They consistently keep me motivated to keep getting stronger and healthy, along with checking in on me to make sure I am okay. Additionally, the rehab work has given me a better appreciation of how physical health can influence your mental health. Athletics has proven to be a great opportunity to focus on my mental and physical well-being. Collectively, I have the strength to overcome the obstacles that lie ahead and be prepared for future endeavors.
