My name is Michael Wayne Williams III, but everyone calls me Mikey. I’m 19 years old and I’m a sophomore at the University of Dubuque, majoring in Computer Science– Information Technology. I just got here not too long ago, and so far, it’s been a pretty cool experience. I’m originally from California, so moving out here has been a big change for me. Back home everything is bigger and there’s always something going on. Here in Iowa, it feels smaller, quieter, and it’s way colder than I’m used to. But honestly, it also feels like a small family community, and I’m starting to see why people like it. Since joining the wrestling team, I’ve felt welcomed. My teammates are chill and they’ve been cool with me since day one, which helped a lot because coming somewhere new can feel weird at first. My coaches have also been supportive, and they’ve been encouraging me while I adjust. I’m also really thankful for my parents.
My mom and dad have always pushed me and told me I can do anything. Even being far from home, I still carry that with me, and it helps me stay confident and focused. Right now, I’m still learning my way around, meeting people, and getting used to everything. But I’m excited to be here, and I feel like this is going to be a good place for me to grow in school, wrestling, and life. Without the support and love from family, coaches, and teammates this transition would have been overwhelming to me. I encourage everyone to make sure that they are developing a support system to help you through difficult times and to help you stay engaged to what matters in your life. Additionally, I have found that training for wrestling and competing in wrestling helps with my physical health and contributes to my mental health. I believe finding something that contributes to your physical health is a lifelong need—it gives you energy, resiliency, and the peace to live your best life.
