My name is Anthony Urrea, and I was born and raised in Stockton, California. Growing up in a fast-paced, diverse West Coast environment shaped my independence and adaptability from a young age. H

owever, my path took a significant turn when I left home as a first-generation college student to attend the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, pursuing both my academic goals and my passion for wrestling. This transition marked the beginning of profound growth in my understanding of brain health, mental resilience, and emotional well-being. Relocating to the Midwest brought a major culture shock. Being thousands of miles away from my family and support system forced me to rely heavily on my own mental strength. The loneliness and unfamiliar environment challenged my emotional stability and highlighted the importance of maintaining strong mental health. Learning how to regulate stress, manage isolation, and stay focused became essential not only for my academic success but for my overall brain health. During this time, wrestling played a critical role in supporting my mental and neurological well-being. Wrestling provided structure, discipline, and routine, all factors that promote my brain health and emotional regulation. The intense physical activity helped reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance mental clarity. Just as important

ly, wrestling fostered a sense of connection and purpose, which protected my mental health during difficult moments of transition and loneliness.

Through wrestling, I learned how physical activity positively impacts the brain by strengthening resilience, improving mood, and sharpening decision-making under pressure. My interest in nursing was sparked by a pivotal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I had to perform CPR on a man in critical condition. In that high-stress moment, my ability to stay calm, focused, and decisive was crucial. This experience revealed the importance of mental preparedness and cognitive control in emergency situations. I discovered that I not only wanted to help people physically, but also recognized how critical brain function, rapid thinking, and emotional regulation are in moments where lives are at stake. Now, as a senior in the nursing program, I continue to develop a deeper appreciation for the connection between brain health and patient outcomes. Nursing requires strong cognitive skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to manage stress effectively. My background as a student-athlete has prepared me to protect my own mental health while supporting others through difficult and high-pressure situations. My journey aligns closely with the mission of organizations such as Spartans Supporting Physical and Emotional Health, which emphasize the importance of mental resilience, emotional wellness, and holistic brain health for student-athletes. Balancing the demands of wrestling and nursing has reinforced my belief that caring for the brain is just as essential as caring for the body. From Stockton to Dubuque, and from the wrestling mat to the clinical setting, my experiences have shaped me into a mentally resilient individual who values brain health as a foundation for personal growth and professional excellence. As I prepare to enter the nursing profession, I am committed to promoting mental wellness, cognitive resilience, and compassionate care in every aspect of my practice.
