KALE ROTH

By November 4, 2026No Comments

My name is Kale Roth, and I’m a senior wrestler for the University of Dubuque. Wrestling has shaped the way I think about both my physical and mental well-being. On the physical side, wrestling at UD has transformed my body. Countless hours of wrestling, running, and lifting have greatly improved my strength, speed, and endurance. Wrestling and shooting takedowns gave me functional power, while grinding through seven-minute matches built unbelievable cardio. Cutting weight taught me discipline around nutrition and recovery. I understand what my body needs because wrestling forced me to learn it. The mental transformation has been even bigger than the physical one. Wrestling is a deeply mental sport, it’s just you and your opponent, with nowhere to hide and no one else to blame. That reality has made me resilient in every part of my life. Losses and rough practices taught me, over and over, to treat failure as information I could learn from instead of something that defeated me. Wrestling also taught me how I handle pressure, whether I’m behind in a match or facing a tough problem outside the sport, I’ve trained myself to stay clear-headed and work through it step by step. Wrestling also taught me what real sacrifice looks like through the late-night training sessions and the things I said no to along the way. That discipline followed me off the mat. Because wrestling strengthened my mental game, I’ve learned how to set real goals and actually follow through on them. Wrestling has also come with real emotional challenges with parting ways with a coach, competing against a close friend, or losing a close training partner so you could both keep growing in your careers. These moments tested my mental resilience, but wrestling was also what carried me through it. Every match I have won reminded me of what I’m capable of and taught me to face life’s challenges. I’m deeply grateful for what wrestling at UD has taught me, not just as an athlete, but as someone who now knows how to take care of his mind and body.
