My name is Christian Jaimes, and I am a freshman men’s basketball player at the University of Dubuque. I am originally from Grayslake, Illinois, and I am currently studying business. Being both a student and an athlete has taught me how important it is to take mental and physical health seriously. As an athlete, I have learned that staying healthy in both areas is what allows me to perform at my best, not only on the court but also in the classroom and in everyday life. I started playing basketball when I was a little kid, so I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference preparation makes. Physical health gives me the energy, strength, and endurance to compete, while mental health gives me the confidence and focus to push through challenges. At times, I’ve gotten down on myself for making mistakes, and those moments can be tough. But being able to handle them the right way is a skill that protects not only my performance, but also my mental well-being. Mental and physical health go hand in hand because one directly affects the other. For example, if I’m stressed, distracted, or lacking confidence, it shows in the way I play. On the other hand, if I’m exhausted, injured, or not physically prepared, it can drain my motivation and affect my mindset. Finding balance between the two is what brings out the best version of myself, both as a basketball player and as a person; that’s why I’m excited to continue playing sports at UD.
