My name is Delisha Davis, I’m from Henderson Texas. I am a junior at the University of Dubuque. I’m also majoring in Wellness and Exercise Science. I am a Cross Country and Track and Field athlete. Running has been a huge factor in my life. I have been running since I could remember. Running has been a very powerful outlet in my life for stress relief, emotional clarity and overall wellbeing. It plays a huge role in not only my mental health but also in my physical wellbeing. When I am stressed out, sometimes a long run is just what I need to clear my head, it’s a habit that keeps me grounded. Running collegiately is very hard mentally and physically but it is what also helps me grow. You learn a lot about yourself during a cross-country meet when you are running in 90-degree heat, tired out of your mind, so far from the finish line but still being positive and telling yourself you are strong enough to finish. The euphoric feeling after running as hard as you can for a 6k is unbeatable, knowing that you pushed through the pain and still gave it your all. I would argue that your mind has to be in better shape than your body to compete in cross country. Mental wellbeing is important; it is also important for everyone to find their own special outlet to help relieve stress or anxiety. Coming to Iowa all the way from Texas was a big decision for me, from seeing my friends and family every day to only seeing them on breaks has been hard for me. Running and being with my team has played a huge part in mental wellbeing. I am looking forward to finishing the season with my team and giving it all I have, mentally and physically.
