My name is Gavin Murrie, a senior men’s tennis player at the University of Dubuque. A local of Lindenhurst, Ill., and a marketing major. Over my years of colligate sports I have found a profound appreciation for both physical and mental health. As a student-athlete for UD and through my journey on the court, I have learned the demands of my sport. The demands exceed my technical skill and physical fitness, but in addition my focus is learning and relying on a positive mindset to be more successful. Mental focus in competitive tennis is more of an extended requirement than physical strength. Each set and match represent a new set of challenges which requires me to adapt to different players, stay calm under pressure, and overcome mistakes. The highs of winning can be exciting, and the lows of defeat can be demoralizing. Understanding the pressure on the court helps me learn how to manage stress and stay focused under pressure. To strengthen both my body and mind, I have committed myself to consistent routines that prioritize wellness. Physically, I focus on strength training and recovery practices like stretching and mobility work, which keep me healthy through long seasons. Mentally, I have worked on developing mindfulness through maintaining a positive mindset, developing a strong support system, and setting realistic goals. These habits have not only improved my performance on the court but also helped me manage stress, remain grounded, and build resilience off the court. As a student-athlete, I am dedicated to improving my physical and mental preparation to foster mental health on campus and among my teammates. I believe tennis is a fantastic way to encourage an active lifestyle while fostering a positive mental health. I look forward to making changes and advocate the importance of personal health in sports, recognizing it includes both physical and emotional stability.
