Hi, my name is Tommy Shore, and I am from Crystal Lake, Illinois. I am a freshman on the University of Dubuque’s men’s hockey team. Over the past couple of years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to play junior hockey. I spent my first year in Utica, New York, playing in the National Collegiate Development Conference, and then my past two seasons playing in the North American Hockey League for the El Paso Rhinos. These past three years have taught me so much through the experiences and challenges I have faced. They have really shaped me into the person I am today, both on and off the ice. With all of these experiences comes adversity, especially when it comes to mental and physical health. Going through junior hockey was not always easy for me. From being the new guy on a team to being out of the lineup, there were times when it took a toll on both my mental and physical health. Fighting through that adversity has made me a better person and athlete. I have had to learn how to take care of my mental health while also going out every day and doing my best on the ice. Pushing myself and not only making myself better, but also helping my teammates and peers become better has always been a priority for me. These experiences have taught me how to be more mature and understand that life is more than just hockey. Now, I am learning how to balance school and hockey, and having a great mindset and attitude helps make the experience enjoyable. Life is not always sunshine and rainbows, but I believe the hard times are what make you better. It is okay to step outside of your comfort zone, be proactive about your mental and physical health, and do the things that will help you become a better person. This will take you a long way in life and your career.
