I am John Dobbe, and I am on the Men’s golf team here at the University of Dubuque. I am from Eldridge, IA, about an hour south of Dubuque. Since being here in Dubuque, I have learned that my friends, family, teammates, coaches, and professors are all there for me to provide the resources and knowledge to tackle any issue that comes my way. As a junior here at UD, it is very easy to get caught up with stressful homework, tests, classes, practice, tournaments, or even just hanging out with friends can bring stress. One big thing I can take away from my time here, and something my coach stresses day in and day out is controlling what you/I can control. It is easy to overthink or stress about every little thing bothering you, but just letting it go can be crucial to your mental health. I always try to apply it to the golf course, and it hasn’t failed me yet. I rely heavily on the things that I can find peace in, and going to them helps me stay mentally focused, and prepared for any situation. One of them being the driving range or golf course. A lot of times when other things bother me, I turned to the golf course to channel my thoughts into a focused golf round, where I wasn’t thinking about all the other things that ruined my day.
